Your pattern will look like this when you complete knitting.

Knit Herringbone Pattern 2

The right side – Skip the edge stitch without knitting.

Pick up next two stitches together as if to cast off. But it is not worked as stockinette stitch exactly.

Knit Herringbone Pattern 4

Insert the needle through the yarns in the back of these two stitches and pull through as if you will knit it.

Knit Herringbone Pattern 5

Drop off, i.e. knit the right stitch of two stitches without pulling the needle and keep the other one on the left needle.

Now pick up this remaining stitch together with the next stitch. You should be knitting the right side of your work; you are supposed to insert your needle through the yarn in the back of the stitches not in the front.

Knit Herringbone Pattern 7

Pull through the stitch as if you will knit it but drop off the first stitch without pulling the needle and keep the other one on the left needle. Continue like this on the down.

Knit Herringbone Pattern 9

Purl two stitches together. (There is no special insert or pull method for the wrong side, it is the same with purling.)

Knit Herringbone Pattern 10

Pull through the stitch.

Knit Herringbone Pattern 11

As you have done with the right side, drop off the stitches only on the right side, namely knit them. Keep the other one on the left needle.

Knit Herringbone Pattern 12

Pick up the remaining stitch together with the next one as in the purling method, knit and drop off one, keep the other one on the needle to knit it with the next stitch. Continue like this on the wrong side.
